Apple Three Ways

I always have lots of apples in the house as we all love them (yes even The Boy !) so I wanted to find some different ways of using them than just plain raw apple. I found these 3 great recipes online and as usual I have made my own alterations to them as they all contained sugar and I really prefer, wherever I can, to avoid giving the kids uneccessary sugar. The first two can be used for desserts or breakfast and all three make great snacks. I hope you enjoy as much as we do!  Continue reading

Lots of Breakfasts

I have a Facebook group about recipes for kids and am also a member of a very large parenting group. Without fail every day people ask for healthy and easy breakfast ideas for children. People are very nice and direct the poster to my site so I thought it would be useful to revisit some of my posts on breakfasts and show them all on one page. I have also shown you some recipe ideas that are perfect for breakfast. Everything is so yummy and takes hardly any time to prepare – just what we all want in the morning!

I hope you find these useful and enjoy!

No bake “Chocolate” naughty(ish) treats

I am proud that none of my recipes contain any added refined sugar (by this I mean the white or brown stuff you get in bags and spoon into things) but sometimes you just have to let your children have something naughty as a treat so I do try to find as healthy treats as I can for them. These recipes are great as none of them require baking and they are quite healthy as there is no added refined sugar (although some of their individual ingredients do contain sugar). They also all contain cocoa powder so are really popular as children think they are eating a proper chocolate treat. I hope you enjoy them!

Pancakes galore

I love pancakes and I have found so many great ways to make them – sweet and savoury. So I thought I would show you some of my favourite pancake recipes that as usual are so easy and quick to make and only need a few ingredients. They can all be frozen so I tend to make a big batch of them, eat some – I mean my kids eat some!! – then freeze the rest. That way you only need to take a couple out at a time, let them defrost then just either heat them up in the microwave or frying pan or pop them in the toaster! Such a great idea for snacks or breakfast and the savoury ones make a lovely, easy dinner. Continue reading

Carrot and apple stars biscuits

I find the most successful recipes are usually the simplest ones. Todays MyMiniMeals Mates Monday recipe is from a lovely lady called Jude on my FB group who showed us all these delicious carrot and apple star biscuits and so far everyone who has made them has loved them. They are so easy to make and are great for a snack or dessert and freeze beautifully. They don’t contain any refined sugar but they do have some honey so aren’t suitable for under 1’s. You could remove the honey if you liked and I am sure they would be as yummy just not as sweet.

DIY Crisps

Both my kids love store bought crisps – in particular ready salted and teddy bear shaped ones. While I am a firm believer that everything is fine in moderation I do watch their salt intake and don’t want them having these crisps too often. I have never made potato crisps before but the other day I had a glut of potatoes that needed using up so thought I would try to make my own. I have made apple crisps before and they were a huge hit so I also thought I would try the same method with pears. I then found some carrots lurking in my fridge and decided to make those into crisps too. Both kids loved them – well, The Boy liked the potato and pear crisps but Little Lady loves carrots so she wolfed the carrot crisps down. Obviously it’s quicker and easier to buy crisps from a shop but these really don’t take much effort or time so have a go and let me know what you think of these DIY crisps!

Nuts about Peanut Butter

We are a peanut butter loving family. Smooth, crunchy, extra crunchy, in cakes, in snacks, on toast, in ice cream – you name it, we love it! Since having children I buy sugar free and preferably salt free peanut butter and it tastes just as nice as the sugar and salt loaded versions. Peanuts are a great source of protein so I’m more than happy to give my kids peanut butter as a snack and The Boy frequently has it on toast or with breadsticks as a bedtime snack. Here are 3 of my favourite recipes using peanut butter and, especially if you use the sugar and/or salt free versions, they are really healthy. Enjoy and go nuts about peanut butter! Muffins Muffins Muffins

Savoury or sweet muffins are a great go-to snack or meal. I freeze them and can easily take as many as needed out and zap them in the micfrowave. They are also a really useful thing to take out with you and we frequently take them on day trips. Little Lady loves holding one on her way to pick up The Boy from school and I love finding new ways to make them and new ingredients to use. Here are my current 3 favourite muffin recipes but watch this space as I am constantly trying new ones!

Sugar Free Biscuits – Part 1

I buy a lot of biscuits from the baby food aisle and both my kids love them but it’s always nicer (and cheaper!!) to make your own. The Boy loves helping me in the kitchen so I try where I can to involve him when I bake. As you have guessed by now I try to avoid giving the kids sugar wherever possible so here are 3 biscuit recipes that are baby, toddler, child and adult friendly and none of them have any refined sugar in them. The first one does have honey but it’s a small amount so it’s good for children over 1 but remember that under 1’s should not have honey. I have called this post Sugar Free Biscuits – Part 1 as I have a few more recipes in my collection but want to save them for another day! Continue reading
